There are several advantages of having a beautiful, well lite landscape. Obviously, safety is a primary advantage. Whether it’s a business or a residence, having a landscape lighting can reduce break-ins and increase the sense of safety throughout the site. Also, installing outdoor security cameras can reduce breakins and increase safety as well. In addition, the design features of the building as well as the landscape can be accentuated and enhanced by using the correct lighting techniques and products. There are features of every site that would benefit from “up lighting”, for instance a multi-trunk specimen oak or a row of small ornamental trees. While other components of the site might be greatly enhanced by “down lighting”, for instance a pergola or an outdoor kitchen space. Knowing what these spaces and elements are and how to accomplish the goals of a lighting design is what this site is about. We’ll be posting design information, pictures, links as well as product information that will help you create the beautiful and well lite outdoor spaces that you are looking for.
Where To Start
Whether you have a small 1,500 square foot house with a small garden or a 5,000 square foot house with lots of outdoor amenities, the the first step is to analyze your site. Sketch out on a notepad or tracing paper your particular site and be sure to include all of the spaces that are part of your landscape. Ideally, having a sketch plan that is to a known scale is ideal. With a “to scale” plan, you will be able to identify how far some lights will cast light based on their specifications, be able to tell whether a site will be over or under lite and accurately estimate the quantity of products and materials needed. Once you have a sketch plan, then you can begin laying out light locations and their lighting direction. Lighting Design basics are crucial for the success of your project.
